Installing Tableau & Exploring on Your Own

Before the first taught lesson, get Tableau installed and spend a few minutes clicking around on your own. There's no substitute for just opening the workspace and seeing what's there.

Download Tableau Desktop

Tableau Desktop (Free Edition) is genuinely free — no trial or credit card needed. It gives you full authoring on local files (Excel, CSV, databases) for individual use.

Explore on Your Own

Once it's installed, open Tableau and just poke around before any lesson tells you what things do:

  • Open the sample data that ships with Tableau (look for "Sample - Superstore" in the connection screen).
  • Drag a couple of fields from the left-hand pane onto the canvas and see what happens.
  • Try the different tabs and panels — you don't need to understand everything yet.
  • Don't worry about breaking anything — there's no undo you can't recover from, and no data you can damage.

Why This Matters

Tableau rewards curiosity. Getting comfortable clicking around before you're taught the "correct" way makes the concepts in the next lesson click faster — you'll already recognize the workspace instead of seeing it for the first time.

Once you've installed Tableau and poked around for a bit, move on to the next lesson: connecting to real data.
