Sorting, Groups & Hierarchies
Three small but essential techniques for organizing what your view shows -- you'll use the first one directly in this module's submission.
Sorting
By default, Tableau orders dimension members alphabetically. To sort a bar chart by the size of a measure instead:
- Click the sort icon (the small ascending/descending bars icon) in the toolbar while your chart is selected, or
- Right-click the axis and choose Sort, then pick the field to sort by and the direction (ascending or descending).
Sorting descending by a measure like Revenue puts your highest performers at the top (or left) of the chart -- much easier to scan than alphabetical order.
Groups
A Group combines several dimension members into a single higher-level category, without changing your underlying data.
- Select the members you want to combine in the view (or in the Data Pane), right-click, and choose Group, or
- Right-click a dimension in the Data Pane > Create > Group... to build one manually.
For example, you could group several long-tail Sub-Categories into a single "Other" bucket so your chart isn't cluttered with dozens of tiny bars.
Hierarchies
A Hierarchy lets viewers drill up and down between levels of detail -- e.g. Category → Sub-Category, or Year → Quarter → Month for dates (Tableau builds date hierarchies automatically).
- To create a custom hierarchy, drag one dimension directly on top of another in the Data Pane and give the new hierarchy a name.
- In the view, a small + or - icon appears next to the field, letting anyone drill down to the next level or back up.
Why This Matters
This module's submission asks you to sort your bar chart in descending order -- that's the Sorting technique above. Groups and Hierarchies aren't required for the submission, but they're common real-world tools for keeping a busy view readable and letting viewers explore data at their own pace.
